I am trying to find more information about the type of gardening or farming where you maybe plant a blueberry bush underneath an apple tree. This is supposed to allow natural type pesticides as well as keep soil rich.

When planting roses do you go with what you love, or what coordinates?

chemrose asked:

Here is the thing. I love roses. At my former house I had some gorgeous roses. At this current house I have tried planting roses, but my Dogs keep eating them. I am now going to rip out 3 large bushes in the flower bed by the house to plant the roses there. (I have a georgeous flower bed, but there are no roses in it. I know they hired someone to design that flower bed, but for me it isn’t complete without roses).
Now my favorite rose is the first prize rose. It isn’t the most fragrant, but for me those large pink flowers cannot be touched. Now that is funny, because pink is not my favorite color, but I just love that rose. I also am partial to the chicago peace. What would you put? I have room for 4-5 rose bushes. I will admit, over the years, I have had a hard time finding a first prize rose. I am going to try really hard this year. I may need to try more than 2 nurseries, but I am willing to try. Do I give up on my fav.? What would you plant if you had the chance?

Is hydroponic produce grown without pesticides? Are they usually genetically modified?

Sweet Tooth asked:

I notice that the hydroponic tomatoes in my market look like they are a lot better quality than the others- even the organic. In the Northeast US you almost never find red ripe tomatoes unless you go to a farmer’s market. The hydroponics are always nice and red- the rest- hard and orange. But I wonder if they are GMO? And if they aren’t GMO and not grown with pesticides, it’s the next best thing to organic, right? Maybe even better because you can actually taste them.

reader.erin asked:

Every time I buy a houseplant or look something up that’s related to any kind of gardening I get completely lost in all the terminology, latin names, etc.

I’d like to get better at gardening and growing things without having to get my degree in horticulture. Are there any sources (websites/books) for beginners who don’t understand all the “big words” ?

How do I take care of sprouts for hydroponic growing?

Mokey F asked:

I cut open an old tomato the other day and found that a bunch of the seeds had sprouted! I would like to grow them hydroponically in a nutrient solution without a ‘medium’. I grow some houseplants that way, in jars of solution with a bit of tin foil around the base of the stems to hold them firmly in the top of the jar, so the roots are half in and half out of the water. The sprouts are still a bit small for this, but I don’t really want to put them in dirt because I would like to keep them clean for later. Any suggestions?
