I just planted a hedge of Knockout Roses-Can you help me with an insect problem?
Posted by Milly in Garden & Landscape on 10 26th, 2008There are 18 roses all together, 9 pink and 9 red. They have been in the ground since March 1st. I noticed a few whiteflies and aphids 2 weeks ago. Since they were do for their first fertilizer, I gave them all a half of treatment of Bayer 2 in one systemic feed and protect for roses. They are all blooming and have doubled in growth since planting, and generally look beautiful, but today I still see a few whiteflies and even more aphids.
Is it safe to spray them with like diazon already? I don’t want to harm the plants but at the same time, I don’t want those little green boogers (aphids) on my plants either. I appreciate your suggestions. Thanks!

Does anyone have any great ideas on gardening a gravesite. Flowers, small bushes and such?
Posted by Milly in Do It Yourself (DIY) on 10 25th, 2008I have been tending a family plot for several years. Then my grandmother passed last August, and all my gardening was upheaved. But now the plot is full, nobody else will be buried there any more, and I would need to start from scratch. Any ideas on planting flowers that will come back next year and maybe a small type bush?
What should I do to have nice roses?
Posted by Milly in Garden & Landscape on 10 24th, 2008I just bought a house and it has 6 rose bushes on it. I have never worked with roses let a lone in a garden. I am clueless. I am not even sure they are roses. It has thorns but the flower comes in batches of 3. The flower looks like a rose so I am just assuming.
I also see a vine growing around one of the bushes which I am trying to cut of it. Is that okay? All the bushes are out of direct sunlight and seam to be doing well. At the tipes of some of the bushes the stems look dead. Should I trim the stems that have no leaves? Should I cut of the flowers after a few days? How often should I water them? Again any info is good info. I am a putz when it comes to gardening.
I am in western New York.
Is there an way to make a little hydroponic growing unit for one plant in my small apartment?
Posted by Milly in Garden & Landscape on 10 23rd, 2008Just was wishing to make a small hydroponic growing unit for one plant in my small apartment. I don’t have too much room and am not wanting to spend a ton of money on a real, professionally built unit.
Thanks.
Is gardening with tires bad for the environment?
Posted by Milly in Garden & Landscape on 10 21st, 2008I have read many articles that suggest using old tires for container gardening. My father is considering making a vegetable garden out of tires. Does the tire pollute the soil and there fore the vegetables? I it is bad to burn tires.. Should I be concerned about the quality of the vegetables? Have you seen any scientific evidence about this topic? Or environmental tests?
