I work in the greenhouses at the University of Illinois, and the two main ways researchers set up hydroponics are either with buckets with lids where they fill the bucket with nutrient enriched water, and place germinating seeds on a mesh screen over (not submerged in) the water. Depending on the strength of the root structure, you may need to switch to a soil-less medium so that the plant can have the stability to grow upright. One way to do this involves the 2nd method soybean researchers here use. That is to have rocks (like what you’d find in small landscaping) with water covering, but not submerging, the rocks. In this method, again you have to transplant germinating seeds. To ensure that the plant grows upright, the soybean researchers wrap the main stalk of the plant around a bamboo stake.
