Can I plant a potted hydrangea from a florist outside?
Julie asked:
I bought a Nikko hydrangea for indoors but I want to transplant it into my outdoor flower bed now. Is this a good idea? I’m in zone 5 so it should be hardy enough. Is it the same as the start I would get at a nursery or are they specially adapted to be indoors only?

When we had a death in the family over 40 yrs ago, someone sent my mom one from a florist. She planted it outside and it has done great. She is in Zone 5 as well. Be sure to feed it acidic plant food if your soil is not acidic. Good Luck.

It should do fine outside. But the color could change depending on your soil. If it is acidic the blooms will be blue. If it is more towards the alkaline side, they will be purple or even pink. If you like the blue color best any fertilizer for acid soil should work.
I think they are beautiful whatever color they are.
It may not flower the first year you plant it out, but it will after that.
Good Luck
