How do bare root roses fare compared to potted roses in first year?

roses
freshbliss asked:

I wanted to plant one by the door at a place I probably wont be in very long….

So I was just wondering what would be a better bet.
I have only planted bare root roses before – would the extra couple of bucks make that big of a difference?

Thanks

    Hi there,

I have grown both, and the container roses do well for two years and then they need to be put into the ground if you want lots and lots of roses. The container rose bush will continue to have healthy pretty leaves, but no roses.

If you ask at a garden centre about Patio roses you would be shown a fine selection of them They grow well in pots and have plenty of small roses
If you move you just take it with you

Hi there, I have tried both bare-rooted and potted roses and I have found that no one is better or worse than the other.
Bare-rooted Pros: Cheap, more variety, already well-pruned.
Cons: Often grafted onto rootstock that may be unsuitable for your area. you must keep roots damp until planting.
Potted roses Pros: You can see what the flowers will be like, there is already healthy foliage, and it is bigger. Can plant all year round.
Cons: more expensive. you will probably have to prune it a bit when planting.

Good luck with your decision… roses are fabulous.

Buy a bare root rose. Use the money you saved to buy a big 5 gallon pot and some potting soil. Plant your rose in there. When you move, take it with you!
