How should I take care of my hydrangea flowers?

hydrangea
Wanderer asked:

First of all, can hydrangea flowers also be planted outside; or are they strictly indoors? What temperature would the hydrangea live at the best?
Then, how do I take care of my hydrangea flowers? How moist must the soil be, etc?

Thank you for any help or advice!

Hydrangea are great shrubs and do very well in the garden. You can start new ones from cuttings or buy them as shrubs. They can take some shade, but tend to wilt in the real hot weather. Just water them and they’ll spring back, however.

Yes, hydrangea can be planted outside. They like moist, but well drained, fertile soil. The hydrangea you have would dictate the care you need regarding spring maintenance; some bloom on new wood (meaning you would cut the old wood down each spring) and some bloom on old wood (which means you can shape the bush but should not cut it down since new growth will not produce flowers). If you do not know for sure, do not cut the bush down in the spring, at least then you will get some flowers. Fertilizer is also determined by the type of hydrangea and the color of the bloom you desire. You can sometimes change the color (blue or red) by adjusting the amount of aluminum in the soil (and the ph balance of the soil). Here is a link explaining how to do this:
