I removed the beautiful climbing hydrangea from my front lawn, what kind of plant should I plant on that spot?
Joy asked:
The climbing hydrangea was so strong that it destroyed my front steps. I have no other choice than removing it. Now we have new front steps, and would like to plant something in that area. Can anyone give us some ideas? The existing plants in our front lawn are a few hollies, a few rhododendrons and 2 small evergreen bushes with tiny leaves.

Hi There,
without really seeing the “space” it is a little difficult to recommend anything, however, I will make an assumption…I assume you are looking for shrubs that flower that will do well in either north or east area (hence, you have shade-loving evergreens…) … A few that I like:
Sarcococca (Sweet Box)…flowers very early spring and very, very fragrant…flowers are really quite insignificant, but it is the fragrance that you will like!
Skimmia … again, evergreen, upright shrub and flowers not too long after the sarcococca…flowers are also fragrant, but not as much as sweet box.
Pieris Japonica … flowers after the skimmia
Anyways, these are just a few that I personally like. Hope this helps.
Happy Gardening!

evergreen clematis are great. hardy to zone 7 or temps of 0-5 degrees fahrengeit. leaves stay glossy green all year and white flowers fill the whole plant throught the growing season spring summer and fall.
