Tomatoes need full sunshine. Lots of vegetables do. I plant a salad garden with several varieties of leaf lettuce and spinach. You can plant them in the shadier areas. They can be planted 2-3 weeks before the last frost. For tomatoes, you have to wait under all danger of frost has passed. Usually, people plant tomato seedlings instead of seeds. Lots of people plant green beans.

Put in a few fruit trees. It’ll encourage bug life and add interest. Other than that, think of what you like to eat, and what is expensive to buy in the shops. Potatoes are easy to grow, as are tomatoes. Root veg is good if you have decent soil.
