The both like to eat bugs, but I wouldn’t put bugs in the garden just on the off chance you’d attract mantids. They won’t hatch yet anyway. You can buy mantid at the nursery. I don’t like spiders, so I don’t know about them.

Find a few of them and have them pose in provocative poses. The males will come around and try to mate with the females. Woohoo….

Do not use any pesticides or insecticides. When we kill something in the garden, we remove an essential element in the food chain.
Be an organic gardener. The mantis’ and spiders will return.

Praying mantids arent all they’re cracked out to be. They eat anything that moves including your beneficial insects. I dont know what you mean by redid. Did he plow it all under, plant all new things or what? What time of year did he do this? Generally bugs will work their way back so patience might be all that you need. As long as he did not put down a lot of pesticides or insecticides, the spiders will be back. The mantids might take awhile if he dug up their eggs. It is better to leave an environment alone rather than to try and reintroduce insects and bugs. If they dont like it, they will abandon it anyhow. Wait and see what comes back of its own accord or look for what has replaced the spiders and mantids. Insects have a way of knowing where they belong.

    Hey meatismurder,

You can buy praying mantis eggs -seriously. The obvious problem with that is they are bugs, that go where they want, like all your neighbors homes too.

If you have been spraying for bugs, stop. That will leave you with more bugs, and the matis may then eat them.

You might try BENEFICIAL Nematodes also. They kill any bugs that enter the dirt. They work on Japanese beatles and grubs, but will also kill beneficial insects (spiders)…

i planted dahlias, about 8 mature bushes.they attracted everything, especially grasshoppers which spiders love.mantis love them to.mantis babies will hide in light green plants like hastes.when i check them each summer i usually find young mantis but they don’t stay.once they’re adults they’ll move elsewhere to feed.that’s why u need the dahlias.don’t use pesticides on your flowers,it’ll kill them and sterilize the plant of any insect food.u can perchase mantis larve from a nursery.spiders will nest in bushes, wood piles, evergreens,i think your dad must have sprayed the yard with a pestiside or the dust drove them out from the work.the trick is that bushes provide a higher elevation so ground feeders won’t pray on them and grass insect killers like grubx won’t affect them either.just replant lots of green stuff and they will come.

Check any Evergreen you see in the winter, the egg sack will look almost like some kind of foam on a branch.I look for them at a local garden center and often find them in his trees. Once they eat all the bugs in your garden they may move on.
