What to do with my hydrangea clippings?
violetsrblue asked:
I have some hydrangea clippings that are just starting to get roots. Should I hold these indoors until next spring to plant outside, or should I go ahead and plant them now? I’m worried they might not be strong enough to survive winter. If I hold them until spring, where should I keep them through the winter?

Plant them out now. They will be quite tough by year end.

I’d be more worried that they don’t survive the stress of summer. Plant them now in an area that doesn’t get full sun all afternoon.

pot them up in pots that will give them room to grow some…. 7-9 inch pots….. then set them in the area where you will eventually plant them (use the methods of ‘hardening off’ if they’ve been in the house for the rooting…. take the time to get them used to outside!)…put them in shade with maybe some morning sun on them…. let them get used to the light there…. then in fall either plant them with six weeks till freeze or bury their pots in the ground and mulch over them till spring…. be sure to attend to their water needs all summer and into fall…. since they’re still in pots!…..
