How to care for spring clearance bulbs?

Gladiolus
dusty_puppy asked:

I picked up some gladiolus and lily bulbs on clearance. They are supposed to be planted in the spring. Of course, they were packed for this spring, and which is why they are so cheap now! How should I best take care of them to get them to grow next year? Should I plant them now, while we still have a month or so of warm weather? Or should I store them, and how, until spring?

Spring bulbs should ideally be planted now. Dig over and mulch the area with some garden compost. The bulbs should be planted at least two bulbs deep and a hand span apart. Water and leave. They should flower april/may of next year. By the way, which variety are they?

The lily bulbs could be planted now but better yet, this fall. Then mulch the area well and you will have flowers next year. Now don’t expect a large amount; it takes a lily a couple of years to get established and to really provide a good amount of blooms.

As far as the glads, I’d put them in a cool but not cold (they don’t like cold which is why they have to be lifted each year in colder climates) dry place until next spring. Ideal container is a mesh produce bag, like onions come in. And hang them so the air can circulate and prevent rotting. Now if you live in an area where it doesn’t freeze, you could plant them now.

I live in the NE and we have to lift glads every year because of the severity of our winters.
