You can actually go into ‘buy’ mode after the plants have grown all the way and pick up each plant and use them to decorate around the house. I haven’t actually tried it myself, but I had the same question a while ago and googled it.

The plant doesn’t do anything special. The object gives you creativity skill points faster than painting or playing an instrument would.
You can sell the plant in buy mode or use it to decorate your sims house.
